We at Loaves & Fishes want to thank you for all the donations this month. Our appeal for help supporting this ministry had an overwhelming response. St. Vincent Pallotti parishioners held a food drive, collecting 39 bags of food and donated $365.00 to the funds. If you are not in a position to donate please help us with your prayers. Loaves & Fishes has grown way past our expectations. May 2009 we served 296 families feeding 1304 people. The need is so great. There are many food pantries in Abilene doing their best to help the needy. We all check our clients through 211-Call for Help-United Way to stop any abuse of the system. This connection has been so useful. Our heartfelt “thank you”.

Bulletins for children: Just a reminder...we still have available for children two different age group bulletins. One will be directed for children 6 years of age and under and the other will be for children 7 years old and over. They are at the entrance of the Church. These bulletins will coincide with the Church’s Liturgical year. We invite parents to take an age appropriate one for your child/ren. May your children enjoy them and look forward to getting one every Sunday.

Congratulations to Von Drea Garcia who competed in the National Competition of Forensic Science of Medicine in Nashville TN. We are proud of you!
A priest who read this gospel remarked that he would consider a day that he “only” cured a few people to be a tremendous day. But from Jesus’ point of view, he was disappointed that so few people in that town had faith. And what about the point of view of the townsfolk? They probably thought Jesus had a lot of nerve preaching to them. That son of a carpenter was not going to tell them how to act. And sometimes we take that same point of view.
One way we do that is directed toward God. A man once asked God to send him a yellow flower. He received a cactus and when he hurt his finger on thorn, he through the cactus out. While he was angry at God for not answering his prayer, his cactus bloomed a yellow flower. When we pray for something very specific instead of asking God to give what we need, we may be trying to change God rather than letting him change us. For example, you might pray for a new job, but God may want to give you the patience or strength to succeed at your present job.
Another way we are like the people in the gospel is when God sends someone to preach to us. It may be a parent who challenges us to act more maturely. It may be a friend who tells how we have hurt her. When we refuse to listen to someone God has sent to help us, we are showing a lack of faith that God is in that person and speaking to us.
“But can’t God change me regardless of my attitude? After all, he is all-powerful.” As powerful as God is, he always respects our free will. We may not be able to stop God’s plan for the universe, but if we stubbornly refuse to believe or to change, he will not force himself on us. I resist change as a child resists growing pains: From the child’s point of view, they seem unnecessary. But God knows that pain is part of growing in faith and love. It all depends on your point of view.
